Types of Therapy Offered

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a type of talking therapy which is used for the treatment of anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions. It is based on the idea that thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours are all interconnected and that changing negative and dysfunctional thinking patterns can change our emotional state.

Gestalt Psychotherapy

This is a type of psychotherapy which focuses on the person’s experience of the present moment and aims to help the client attain increased self awareness and self acceptance. It is used to treat various difficulties such as mood disorders, addictive behaviours, grief/loss, relationship issues and other difficulties.

Qualified psychotherapists trained in this therapeutic technique are available at Maia Psychology Centre.

Play Therapy

This is one of the types of therapy which is mainly used with children. Children may find it difficult to express their thoughts or their emotions to parents or other adults in their lives. A trained therapist can use play in order to observe and gain insight into a child’s difficulties. The therapist can then assist the child in exploring his or her feelings and can help them learn new ways of coping and behaving.

Dramatherapy

Dramatherapy is a therapeutic process that uses creative and dramatic techniques to enhance well-being, to support people to develop their personal potential, and for emotional and psychological healing. The therapist and client create the process together. The sessions draw from many aspects of drama such as stories, movement, rhythm, voice, improvisation and role.

Family & Couple Therapy

We are all born within a family, whether this is with blood relatives, adoptive or foster parents or guardians. The interactions which play out within this familial context, will create patterns of attachment and behaviour within the individual members.

Family therapy is a type of psychological therapy which aims to assist family members to improve the communication between them, to resolve conflicts effectively, and to help the family system deal with specific situations such as the death of a loved one, a physical or mental health issue or other transition in the lives of the family members.

Family & Couple Therapy at Maia Psychology Centre is offered by warranted systemic family therapists.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

This is a form of psychotherapy which is used in the treatment of trauma as well as other mental health difficulties.

In this type of therapy, the client is supported to relive traumatic or difficult experiences, in small doses, while the therapist directs the client’s eye movements. Through this treatment, clients are supported to process traumatic or disturbing life events with the aim of reducing the emotional response to triggers in their present lives.
